Throwback Thursday: Becoming The Master

My adventure like many others started when I was ten years old. At the time Pokémon was huge for both the Anime, trading cards and video game. It had everyone talking in the playground at school.

I had spent the summer playing Pokémon Red and Blue with a friend and had really enjoyed it. I had a small collection of Pokémon Trading Cards but knowing I would soon be getting my own Game Boy and a copy of the new Pokémon Yellow game was super exciting.

As soon as I was given it I was hooked on the game. I didn’t rush through the game I just took my time, tried to complete my Pokédex, tried numerous times to get the Surf HM from the Safari Zone and even like many others did the trading glitch with my Pokémon.

I loved the fact that Pikachu would follow you around and you could somewhat interact with them as well. Already knowing the story helped me a little bit progress through the game. I even spent countless hours levelling up my Pokémon just so I could beat the Elite 4 first time which I successfully did. I mean there is also the time I printed out a one hundred page walkthrough for the game from the internet which I still have but at the time my parent’s we not amused that I printed it out.

After completing Pokémon Yellow,  PokémonSilver and Gold were on the horizon to be released. It was a little while before I got the game myself and I had actually picked it up from a car boot sale along with an Ancient Mew trading card and a few other pokemon goodies. I played Pokémon Gold so much and it definitely became one of my favourites from the franchise and still is to this day.

I continued my journey to becoming a master by picking up the next few releases over time from local second-hand shops and even at one point had a Spanish copy of Pokémon Blue.

When Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver were revealed I was straight down to my local GAME store pre-ordering both. This was also around the time where my brother started to play the Pokémon games. He had played a few of the ones I had already and really enjoyed them but what he didn’t know was that he was also going getting his own Nintendo DS and copy of Pokémon HeartGold to play as well. Seeing his face unwrapping both of the boxes was priceless and soon he became my Pokémon Trainer partner in crime and we both challenged each other to see who could beat the Elite Four in both Jhoto and Kanto first.

Fast forward a few years and while I continued to pick up each of the new Pokémon games in some form usually with myself having one version and my brother getting the other I still enjoy sitting down and playing them. I haven’t finished Pokémon Ultra Moon as of yet but I’m getting there slowly (very slowly). I really enjoyed playing Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and I’m currently playing through Pokémon Crystal as well.

I am really excited to play one of the new upcoming Nintendo Switch game, Pokémon Lets Go Pikachu and Pokémon Lets Go Eevee as not only is it incorporating Pokémon GO into the game it is also taking you back to Kanto with the Pokémon Yellow story. Ten years old me is incredibly excited about this. I’m also excited to see the next instalment to the main game series which will hopefully come next year for the Nintendo Switch.

The journey to becoming a Pokémon Master can be a long one but it is definitely one that is fun and full of challenges along the way. You never know what is just around the corner but you’ve got to try and catch ’em all along the way!
