BLACKPINK’s documentary, Light Up The Sky landed on Netflix earlier today and I’ve been looking forward to watching it since I stumbled across the trailer on Youtube last week. Knowing that I had the day off I knew it would be a good way to spend a couple of hours of my day.

The first time I heard of BLACKPINK was back when they released DDU-DU -DDU-DU back at the end of twenty-eighteen. I stumbled across it on Twitter and have followed the group ever since.

The documentary itself is just under an hour and a half long but it was a really good insight into BLACKPINK. Not only did it focus on what it’s like to be a member of BLACKPINK but also a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes. It was interesting to see some of the recording processes, getting ready for an album, touring, performing at Coachella and, the general day to day happenings of being a K-Pop Idol.

What I enjoyed most about the documentary is that while you got an idea of what it was like being of BLACKPINK, you also get an idea of what it was like to be a YG Entertainment Trainee. There were several moments during the documentary where you could see footage of Jennie, Lisa, Rosé, and Jisoo’s pre-debut performances and it’s amazing to see just how far they have come and how hard they’ve worked.

Each member had their own individual segment that gave you an idea of their own personal journey to becoming a BLACKPINK member. It gave us a brief idea of what it was like for them growing up, where they grew up and what they have experienced and learned over the years. It was much more personal than what I initially expected but it really brought everything together. Despite each member’s background and where they grew up each of the four members brings something unique to the group and that is what makes BLACKPINK who they are.

Of course, I can’t forget about the group’s long-awaited debut album, The Album. How You Like That was the first song to be released from the album and I loved the song from the first time I heard it. Ice Cream that features Selena Gomez took a little while for me to like. I felt really unsure about the song because it just seemed so different but the more I listened to it the more I liked it.

As for the rest of the album, I had no idea what to expect however, listening to the album for the first time I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of songs that BLACKPINK had created. Lovesick Girls was the albums overall title track and I kept playing it over and over again alongside the music video. To be honest I loved each song on the album. The mix of using both Korean and English in the songs worked amazingly and each song was unique in its own way. Pretty Savage is another one of my favourite songs, There’s just something about it that made me kept going back to it, again and again, to listen to it.

The song that surprised me the most on The Album was Bet You Wanna featuring Cardi B. I’ve never really listened to any of Cardi B’s music myself so this is the first time I’ve really listened to her on a song. I did a little bit of investigating after and listened to a few of Cardi B’s songs and while it isn’t really what I would normally listen to, this collaboration worked perfectly.

Don’t forget to check out The Album and catch BLACKPINK Light Up The Sky on Netflix right now! Listened to The Album already? Let me know what your favourite songs are!
