My Favourite Games of Twenty-Twenty

Another year has come to an end and again it has been filled with epic adventures and amazing memories. Despite what has been going on in the real world video games have been there every step of the way for many of us. For me, it has been the perfect way to escape and relax as well as connecting with friends and communities across the world.

Throughout the year I discovered many new games, rediscovered some old favourites, and finally checked out some older games that were long overdue. My backlog has continued to grow and the Xbox Game Pass has helped me discover even more games during the course of twenty-twenty.

I’ll be totally honest, there have been so many games that I could call my favourites for the past twelve months. In fact, I could probably say almost all the games I’ve played have “sparked joy” in some shape or form. It was really difficult to narrow down what you could say is my top four.

Animal Crossing New Horizons

I think many of us can agree that Animal Crossing New Horizons came out at a somewhat perfect time. Those first few weeks after the UK was placed into lockdown was filled with building up my Island to what it is now. I was worried that I would drift away from the game fairly quickly but I was well and truly wrong. I still pick up the game a number of times throughout the week and love checking in with my villagers. I still have a fair chunk of debt to pay off with Tom Nook but I’ll get there eventually I guess.

The Last of Us Part II

I was so undecided about whether or not to start playing The Last of Us Part II before finishing the first game (even though I knew the ending and the majority of the main storyline) or whether to wait it out. Curiosity got the better of me and I dived straight into the game a few days after it’s release. I had no idea what to expect and I still don’t really know how much more of the game I’ve got to go but I am determined to finish it!

Final Fantasy VII remake

I know, I know. I probably should have played the original first but I didn’t. I dove straight into the remake and loved every moment of it. I have since played the original as well and I honestly can’t understand why I hadn’t played it sooner. I still feel that I have so much more to discover within the game before the next segment of the remake is released. Guess I’ll be starting a new playthrough soon!

Tell Me Why

I’ve had an interesting experience with Tell Me Why but overall this game was magnificent! I loved all of the Life is Strange games so I had a slight idea as to what to expect from Tell Me Why. I’ll be honest and say I was not ready. I was totally unprepared for such a beautiful looking game and roller-coaster storyline that Tell Me Why delivered. It had me feeling every single emotion throughout the game and I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Honourable Mentions:

Death Stranding

Although the game was not released on PlayStation 4 during twenty-twenty, I want to add Death Stranding into this list as it was a game that I picked up this time last year and I played a lot during January & February. Despite the fact it is taking me forever to make any progress, I honestly did not expect to enjoy the game as much as I have done. I was blown away by how beautiful it looked but it also terrifies me whenever there are BT’s nearby. I know I will one day complete it, I just don’t know when that will be.

There are a few more games I want to mention in this post. Each of these games have been great fun to play over the past twelve months.

  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
  • Phogs
  • Watch Dogs Legion
  • The Sims 4 Snowy Escape & Tiny Living
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
  • Ooblets.

I’m looking forward to another incredible year of gaming and discovering even more favourites during the next few months. Let me know what are some of your favourite games from twenty-twenty!

  1. I enjoyed The Last of Us Part II immensely, even giving it my Game of the Year award. I was disappointed in the FF7 Remake. I thought did far too much faffing around and could have done with being streamlined a bit, especially with further games to come.
